Tale
Imprisoned in Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, Divine G finds purpose in a theater group with other incarcerated men in this story of resilience, humanity and the transformative power of art… At the beginning of the film, the actors are trying out different roles in the play. The group has been criticized for not doing comedy, but their previous performance was A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which is a comedy.

Late Night with Seth Meyers: Anna Faris / Colman Domingo / Jose Medelez (2024). Although set in a New York prison, this new indie film distributed by A24 isn’t exactly a “prison movie.” in the conventional sense, but more as an emotionally affecting and inspiring drama about how art, especially theater, can restore people in need of rehabilitation. The film portrays this issue in a realistic and honest manner and forms the cornerstone of the entire compelling story.
Colman Domingo plays the main character who is incarcerated but helps run the prison theater group
The film takes a while to really get into its stride, but it’s still engrossing and engaging. Domingo’s performance is superb, displaying understated emotions in a way that deeply affects the viewer and conveys a deep sense of compassion. The supporting cast is also great, and many of the supporting cast have clearly been to prison.
I recommend it with pleasure
Incorporating the theater program into the narrative creates comic relief, but also pathos and a strong bond between the inmates and the program director. "Sing Sing Sing" it’s not perfect, as the character development of the supporting characters could be improved, but the beating heart and thoughtful, humane tone are truly touching and memorable. 8/10.
