Physical sets, practical creatures, and miniatures were used whenever possible to aid subsequent VFX work
Plot
While cleaning up the deep ends of an abandoned space station, a group of young aliens come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. Director Fede Alvarez explains the rule he set for Alien: Romulus was that “if it can” be practical, it will be practical," so that the Actors always acted opposite the physical representation of the xenomorph. Director Fede Alvarez was looking for the special effects crew from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures. When Rain breaks the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, their blood is left in the air in long, smeary patterns. . Zero gravity in real life causes liquids to form into spheres and not spread out in long flat chunks like in the movie.

Andy: The solution for a claustrophobic astronaut is to give him more space. 20th Century Studios’ fanfare freezes and turns ominous, as in Alien 3 (1992), leading up to the film’s opening scene. Positives first – Good action, great practical special effects and great visuals.
The action was exciting with some scary moments
Director Fede Alvarez and his production team have captured the dark atmosphere of Alien and the exciting action of Alien almost perfectly. The use of practical effects and realistic miniatures was so refreshing to see in this era of CGI excess. Seeing a fully realized Xenomorph in the flesh blew me away, and the space scenes were beautiful. This camera work, visual presentation and the use of quality, albeit limited, CGI when needed were excellent. Negatives – Mediocre acting, nostalgia bait story, copy & pasting dialogue from the better Alien movies, and incorporating lore elements from the worse prequels that you wouldn’t want in the official canon. Also, the reveal of the villain was "oh, get out of here " I will say no more at this time.
To no purpose
Apart from the great lead actor Spaeny playing his role, the other actors/characters were just fine. I found the nostalgia bait story boring, eye-rolling and almost fourth wall breaking, it ruined the immersion for me. I’m tired of sequels/prequels that rely heavily on lazy “remember berries”; getting a kick out of the casual audience and making Alien fans almost angry. To be honest, that’s just lazy scripting and disrespect to the other Alien movies that did it first!. Also copy & the attached dialogue from the better Sigourney Weaver Alien movies was very confusing. 20th Century Studios should have called it Alien: Remember because you trusted too much oh, Remember this bit…
Alien: Romulus, an above average hit Alien movie, the 4th best movie in the series
Finally, trying to add all the controversial and franchise-damaging Prometheus nonsense to the movie was frustrating, I hated everything about the origin of Space Jockey and the creation of the Xenomorph garbage . And don’t get me started on the villain, I don’t want to spoil anything, but it was ridiculously lazy. I think setting the movie between the first two movies was a mistake, because you have to make your movie fit into the established continuity of the franchise with all the tie-ins and plot beats that it entails. They should have made a sequel years after Alien: Resurrection and started a brand new Alien saga long after the adventures of the Weavers (and with better writers). This might have been spot on with Aliens, but the disappointing cast of characters made the skinny "remember-berry" story and bad script, it was disappointing.
