Alcohol-associated cancers
Here, we see particularly high levels of alcohol abstinence across North Africa and the Middle East. In most countries in this region, the majority of adults have never drunk alcohol. When we look at gender differences, we see that in all countries, men have a higher alcohol consumption than women. Again, the prevalence of drinking across North Africa and the Middle East is notably lower than elsewhere. Alcohol deaths have steadily climbed over the past decade, a trend that accelerated during the pandemic (Figure 1). When adjusted for population growth and age, the alcohol death rate has risen by 70% from 2012 to 2022, moving from 7.97 to 13.53 deaths per 100,000 people.
