Amber, the happiness agent, travels the Himalayas of Bhutan, investigating people’s happiness. On her remote mountain journey, she seeks fulfillment… While watching The Happiness Agent, I wasn’t sure if it was a satire because calculating the happiness index seems… so simple. I mean, a happiness barometer, if there can be one, is so complicated because there are so many things to consider. It was great to see the interviews the two main characters do with people from different walks of life, and in some cases, photos. people who are happy at the expense of others in the family. Maybe the moral is that if most things in your life are good enough, you’re probably happy. Even if that takes into account the number of cows you own or the latest iPhone. The main character is charming, and I wish I could be as happy as he is in the film, despite the sources of his sadness. (Screened at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024.)
