Based on the novel ‘Foregone’ by Russell Banks
Plot
Leonard Fife, one of the sixty thousand draft dodgers and deserters who fled to Canada to avoid service in Vietnam, shares all his secrets to demythologize his mythologized life..
This is the second time Paul Schrader has directed one of Banks’ novels for the screen, following his adaptation of Affliction (1997)
With such a great cast as Richard Gere, Uma Thurman and Michael Imperioli, you’d think you had the star power to create a better film than this.
Well, you’d be wrong
Paul Schrader’s “experimental” in a film that seems like something a first-year college student would do, who Schrader claims was friends with the war protester/director whose life story this film is based on, but with friends like that, who needs enemies?
His character becomes increasingly unpleasant and gradually loses the ability to express himself verbally as he rages at everyone around him, muttering as he descends into darkness
In other words, he becomes exactly like Paul Schrader today, and skip this, even with streaming I can’t imagine it would be better if you could pause it and leave the room to do more important things than watch this sad excuse of a film.
