Plot
Under a burning sky on the side of a road on the coast of Ceará, the Destino Motel is the scene of dangerous games of desire, power and violence. One night, the arrival of the young Heraldo decisively changes the daily life of the place. Nevidljivi is the sixth film directed by Karim Aïnouz, which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. “Destination Motel” is a quiet but eventful erotic thriller with traces of modern noir, telling a story about the need to escape and all the obstacles that come with it.
His initial plan was to do one last job of crime and move to São Paulo to find honest work
In this desperate desire to escape, one can find oneself trapped in other situations or find a place to live and a destiny to fulfill. Ceará as a hideout, fleeing from a group of criminals due to the failure of a task that ends badly for a companion. The eponymous motel is run by a married couple, middle-aged Elias (Fábio Asunção) and his wife Dayana (Nataly Rocha), he as the manager, she as the multitasking receptionist. In exchange for his help, Heraldo works at the motel, fixing electrical appliances or anything else that needs fixing and cleaning.
Love blossoms for the new couple, but Heraldo still worries that his friends are running away to find him
In this combination of loners, Elias finds a hard-working friend in Heraldo, and Dayana finds a new lover in a torrid affair, hidden from her husband as well as from the customers who visit the place (barely visible, mostly heard through loud sexual moans in ). Karim Aïnouzé’s latest film is fascinating but not entirely; sexy and bold, but with little emotion and plenty of unexpected humor. It’s almost like taking elements of film noir (loners, troubled and violent characters) but placing them in a motel set around the incredibly beautiful beaches of Ceará – it’s such a beautiful sight, it’s like seeing another world. The story is emotionally complex, which is good, but you can feel empty or like you haven’t gained or experienced much.
Another major attraction of “Destination Motel” comes from the acting
It’s not as edgy as it could be, but it’s a bit satisfying and very exciting. Deep Down is a film about the human element of hiding and how the characters cope with escaping dangerous situations, hiding from themselves and others (as evidenced by Elias’s small movements in Heraldo) and ultimately any form of escape brings many unexpected outcomes: passion, love, violence or death. Iago and Nataly make an interesting and sexually charged couple, with great chemistry. Although his acting doesn’t seem very strong to me, and some of the lines sound strange, I think he’s very suitable for a role that attracts both women and men (in the hotel we have a fourth employee, played by Yuri Yamamoto, who likes Heraldo, but the script limits him in the background with whispered lines and later one key moment).
Then there’s Fábio Asunção
For a newcomer, Iago did quite well in the most daring sex scenes. What a performance, what a role! An entire generation remembers him as the hero of a soap opera from decades ago, and others that followed his downfall some time ago. He doesn’t do many films, but thanks to this film he will also be remembered as a film actor.
