While scouring the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. See how the Alien movies rank according to user ratings on IMDb. Director Fede Alvarez sought out the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures. Physical sets, practical creatures and miniatures were used wherever possible to aid further VFX work. When Rain shuts down the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, all their blood sprays into the air in long, blurry patterns. Zero gravity in real life causes liquids to form into a sphere rather than spread out in long, flat pieces like in the movie.. Andy: The solution for a claustrophobic astronaut is to give him more space..
It was… well, I guess?
20th Century Studios fanfare freezes and it gets sinister, like in Alien 3 (1992), leading to the opening scene of the film. The logo itself suffers a burst of static electricity and turns green.. A few hours after I left the theater and I don’t know what to do with it. It felt like Fedy Alvarez was researching the production of each of the previous films and every remaining idea from them was finally thrown onto the screen, along with revisiting the core components of the franchise.
Been there, done that
You have parts from Alien, Aliens, Resurrection and Prometheus/Covenant. For fans of the series, there are subtle and not-so-subtle Easter eggs every few minutes, from sound effects to reused dialogue. The plot is really simple as it should be. A group of people exploring a space station. However, I really liked the use of temperature and gravity in this movie, they were something not seen much in this universe. And there were a lot of jump scares. I’m not usually a fan of them, but this time they worked out well.
Aesthetically pleasing if you like that kind of look
The two main actors were pretty good, the rest pretty forgettable. And you’re not sure what to do with an actor’s otherworldly role…The world is great. Forget the sleek and clean world of Prometheus, this is going back to the ugly retro futuristic stuff of the 70s. Just wonderful. In the end, though, it feels like there’s really nowhere for this franchise to go story-wise. I wouldn’t call it artistic bankruptcy, but it’s close. Although this movie did a good job of connecting the "correct" With the Alien movies and the new Prometheus all around, it’s hard to think of anything else to make of this creature.
More solo films?
Almost all the mystery has been removed from the Xenomorph. I wonder if there is anything to be done with this creature? The final season of "What we do in the shadows" is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month. Check out our October calendar for more!
